FM27 Best Formations: Which Shape Fits Your Squad?

There is no single "best" formation in Football Manager 27. The right shape depends on how strong your squad is compared with the league, and which positions you have depth in. FM27's Tactical Effectiveness screen makes this clearer than before: it shows how well your players fit the roles you pick. Below are the three shapes we are building and testing in the Lab, and when each one makes sense.

4-2-3-1 – for favourites

Use it when: you expect to finish in the top four and most opponents will sit deep.

Why it works: two holding midfielders protect the centre-backs during counter-press, while three attacking midfielders and a pressing striker win the ball high. It needs mobile full-backs and at least one creative number 10.

Setup: Attacking mentality, short passing, wider attacking width, runs in behind, counter-press, high line, very frequent pressing. Roles: sweeper keeper, two centre-backs, attacking left-back, inverted right-back, DM plus box-to-box, inside winger / attacking midfielder / winger, pressing forward.

In-match: once you lead after the hour, drop to a possession-keeping instruction to cut the counter-attack risk.

4-3-1-2 diamond – for central squads

Use it when: you have good central midfielders and strikers but few natural wingers – common in mid-table sides.

Why it works: the diamond overloads the middle and gives two strikers to play off an attacking midfielder. Width comes from the full-backs, so they must have stamina.

Setup: Positive mentality, play through the middle, overlaps, be patient, counter-press, mid block, standard pressing. Roles: two attacking wing-backs, a deep-lying playmaker, two carrileros or mezzalas, an attacking midfielder, a poacher and a deep-lying forward.

In-match: if the opponent overloads your flanks, switch play more often to drag them back.

5-4-1 – for underdogs and big away games

Use it when: you are fighting relegation, playing away at a stronger side, or protecting a lead.

Why it works: five defenders and a narrow four leave very little space between the lines. The ball goes forward quickly to a target forward, and the wide midfielders join the counter.

Setup: Balanced or Cautious mentality, direct passing, counter, target man, regroup on loss, low block, narrow defence, step up to catch full-backs offside. Roles: two defensive wing-backs, three centre-backs, two defensive wide midfielders, a ball-winning midfielder plus a deep-lying playmaker, a target forward.

In-match: late in games, when you chase a goal at a set piece, you can send the keeper up.

FAQ

What is the best formation in FM27?

It depends on your squad. A 4-2-3-1 with high pressing suits favourites, a 4-3-1-2 diamond suits squads with strong central players, and a 5-4-1 suits underdogs and away games.

Is 4-2-3-1 still good in FM27?

Yes. It remains one of the most balanced shapes because the double pivot protects the defence while three attacking midfielders support the striker.

How do I know if a formation fits my players in FM27?

Check the Tactical Effectiveness screen. It shows how well each player suits the chosen role; change roles first if several players show a poor fit.
